ABORTION
(Joshua Nnadimma Ayozie)
Poet,Philosopher and a Novelist
My pride is desecrated,
My dignity little less than nothing I am demystified,
Stop, stop! Not anymore, let loose the gate by whom?
The mortarboard is stolen
Shall I sing or dance my rejection alone?
Shall I not cry out my eyes one thousand times while time is?
I was not consulted am stabbed by my heart murmur,
I preferred my place among other women.
The mortarboard is stolen
Oh! Now lost my taste am not anymore the white substance,
Who are these things making entrance in the holy land?
What are those noises about?
Cats, Parrots and owls in my hut?
The mortarboard is stolen
Restore my glory while the moon is full,
I am the great oche amamihe,
I am the greatest priestess of wisdom, give I say another abode to him,
All generation adored, now none is left of me.
The mortarboard is stolen
I can’t bear anymore the betrayal,
My shrine is defiled,
I am mother of all wisdom,
I am that giant dishing out all wisdom,
I am that same epitome of beauty thrilling all eyes.
The mortarboard is stolen
Tear me apart not again,
What do you call this Civilization, modernization or achievement?
Oh! I am lost forever.
The mortarboard is stolen
I say you must know, in me are the yet to born,
Do not let them go still,
My place among other ancestress demolished,
Nothing is left of me I mourn.
The mortarboard is stolen
Remember I say remember my beloved,
The fire you have ignited consumes, no ancestors shall quench,
Let us preserve the minutes left among mankind,
The joy I see, the noise I heard, the dream of Julius Ceasar’s wife.

This is a typical poem of rejection. The poet persona thinks an original is rejected for that which is less a superior because it is attractive to the eyes and is applauded by people. The poet is pained because now that the gate is left open, restrictions lifted and some values bent there shall now be a rush and infiltration that cause more harm than good to man and the society. The poet persona weeps for the yet to be born.
The questions are: Who what is rejected and what could be the exact poetic analysis given this masterpiece?
